PBA Fiber Study

Attention PBA members in good standing, the 2011/2012 fiber study has been approved by the PBA board. To make this study a success, we need as many fiber samples as possible. So when you shear this fall and spring, take fiber samples. Each member may submit up to six fiber samples (one sample per goat please).

Goats must be PBA registered Pygoras (F2 and greater) and older than 1 year in age. If you want to send in fiber samples from F1 goats and/or goats younger than 1 year old, you may do so, but you must pay the full price of the test and the F1-goat and kid data will be published in an appendix to the main study.

The PBA will pay for one half of each sample. If we get more than 51 samples, the cost for each ODFA 100 test is $8.75. Therefore, the cost for you is $4.38 per sample.

To take a fiber sample:

1. From the barrel of your goat (middle of the side), cut or shear at least a 2-inch square of fiber at the skin level (as close to the base of the staple as possible without cutting your goat).

2. Do not brush, comb, clean or fold the sample. Place it carefully, in lock formation, into a sandwich-sized, Ziploc bag.

3. Label the Ziploc bag with the following (or you can fill out and put in the bag the on-line form at http://www.ymccoll.com/sample_form.html)

• I.D. (name and registration or ear tag number)

• Age (date of birth)

• Sex (buck, doe or wether)

• Breed

• Date of Sampling

4. Fill out the Goat Information Form (this is separate from the information required by Yocom McColl)

5. Send the fiber sample(s), the Goat Information form, and a check made out to Yocom McColl for your samples to:

If you want to submit more than six fiber samples, please send me an email to that effect. If everyone who wants to participate has done so and we still have funding left, I will contact those who want to submit more than six and they can submit additional samples.
